How can you ensure that your struggling readers have access to
texts they can easily read?
I would ensure that struggling readers have access to texts
they can easily read by allowing them to choose from an extensive collection of
books. I would use leveled books in the classroom as well as e-books to
encourage reading in and out of the classroom. By conducting running records
every two months I would keep track of students’ reading progress and guide
them to read texts accordingly.
How can you foster a learning environment in which students have
many opportunities to practice reading?
I would create a learning environment in which students have
many opportunities of practicing reading. I would create a comfortable and
welcoming reading area for students to read in. Each day, I would allot a
specific amount of time for students to read independently. Students would have
opportunities throughout the day to do choral reading, reader’s theater and partner
reading.
Describe ways in which you can model fluent reading in your
classroom throughout the day.
I can model fluent reading in the
classroom by working in small groups with my students. I can also model fluency
by reading short stories aloud and have students follow along or simply listen.
For students who are struggling readers, I would work on repetitive oral
reading to help build fluency. These strategies would allow me to demonstrate
proper expression, phrasing and pacing for the students.
Many scholars are doing research on the oral reading fluency as an indicator of overall reading competence. Do more research on this topic. :)
