Week 10 - Assignment 2

  1. Hi Fatima,

I agree that ELL students often become frustrated due to their lack of ability to communicate with others at school. I also agree the teachers tend to focus more on non-ELL students than ELL students. I suppose that this is because these teachers do not feel that they are equipped to give ELL students the help that they need. Also, in the classes that I observe there are about 22 students. Often times the teachers are not able to provide assistance to all of the students who need it. Unfortunately ELL students can go unnoticed during these times because they do not know what the assignments are about. Therefore they do not ask for help. I agree that embracing the native language of students is one way to help ELLs. It is a method that is often overlooked for fear that it is counterproductive. However, I have learned that students who are literate in their native language have an easier time learning English.
